Faith Formation

What is Family Faith Formation?

Simply put, it is formation for the whole family, parents and children. Formation involves more than catechetical instruction, however.  As Catholics we should strive, yes, to inform ourselves of the teachings of the church. To form something involves molding or shaping.  To that end we need to steep ourselves in the Traditions associated with the Liturgical Seasons and come to know the saints whose lives may then inspire our own. We learn over time how to shape our lives within the mold of the Catholic liturgy, creating a Catholic culture in our family life. Our Faith is something to be lived, not merely studied.

At St. John the Evangelist Parish, we desire to share these rich traditions with parishioners and aide you in creating a Catholic culture in your homes. To support our efforts, we have chosen to use materials produced by the Church of  St. Paul in Minnesota, titled FAMILY formation. These materials were created as an apostolate, the goal of which is best conveyed from a quote on their website:

Family Formation is designed to help parents respond to the Church's call to be "the first and foremost educators of their children"* and to help families grow in the transforming love of God by understanding and living the Catholic Faith. *Gravissimum Educationis

Nationally there is a movement in this direction. The Diocese of Fargo, the Diocese of Denver and St. Paul are a few examples of diocese that have already implemented or are moving in the direction of whole family catechesis.  Within our own diocese, Bishop Konderla recently released his first pastoral letter, God Builds A House, in which he calls on parishes to help “strengthen the family and the Domestic Church,” in part, by offering family-based catechesis. Thus, we are confident of our direction and relying on the Holy Spirit to guide and bless our efforts.

Family Faith Formation will occur each Wednesday evening at 7pm. Sandwiches will be served prior to the start of class. Let us feed your hunger and the desire to learn more about our Catholic faith.

Please call the Parish Office, 918-423-0810, for additional information or to let us know you would like to attend.
